Custom Responsive Website Design for a Public Library

Spotlight Client: Fiske Public Library

Located in Wrentham, Massachusetts, the Fiske Public Library is a vital part of their community. With services spanning far beyond books, the library boasts a digital library, recurring and special programs for both adults and children, package pick up, and a place to copy, print and fax. The Fiske Public Library is a place for all ages to take part in a variety of activities, and their versatility is a solid foundation for Wrentham and surrounding communities.

How Our Web Design Will Help Them Thrive

The Fiske Public Library’s website was outdated, unorganized, and difficult for their staff to update on their own. Their site was overflowing with content, but was hard to navigate with multiple menus and no clear organization of information. In addition, their site was not mobile-responsive, making it virtually unusable by the younger families and youth they were trying to connect with.

The library webmaster reached out to us to do a complete redesign. We determined that they needed to modernize and simplify their site to better inform the public of the many diverse offerings of the library. An intense site reorganization was done, mapping every item that was on their current site, and coming up with a new site map that was more intuitive and clearly organized. Much like the physical library is organized by book genres and specific areas that patrons could use, the new website was organized to help the virtual visitor to find the books, programs or services that they were looking for.

We used drop down menus, find-it-fast buttons, icon image links, and a search tool to help organize content and give the user experience top priority. The website is also now mobile friendly and secured by an SSL certification for google compliance. However, the most important change was the ability to make adjustments after the redesign through Joomla; Fiske Public Library has the ability to update and publish/unpublish website content to fit their needs.

Since the pandemic began, the library has only been open for curbside pickup. The website which was previously an afterthought, has become a very important communication vehicle for keeping the public updated on library offerings and news.

"Robin was great to work with. She explained the process of designing the new site and worked with our suggestions. Any questions we had she was able to answer and she made the changes we asked for easily. I can't think of anything I would want improved. The staff really like the new design. I have heard from the patrons that they are finding it much easier to use than the previous design. I use the provided instructions a lot and they are really helpful, allowing me to make updates easily and often."
